Instagram Trial Reels: How They Work in 2026
Instagram Trial Reels let you post a Reel to non-followers first, so you can see how it does before your followers see it. If it performs well, you share it with everyone. If not, it stays out of your followers' feeds. Meta began rolling the feature out in December 2024 for business and creator accounts, according to Business Today's coverage. As of November 2026, the sources disagree on who can use it, so check the rules on your own account before you plan around it.
What a trial Reel does
Most guides agree on the basics:
- The Reel is shown to people who do not follow you. It stays off your followers' feeds and off your profile grid while it is on trial (Postfa).
- A trial is unlisted, not private. One guide warns that someone can still see it if it is sent to them in a DM.
- Insights arrive about a day after posting. Guides suggest waiting until around the 24-hour mark before you judge the numbers (Inro).
Share it yourself, or let Instagram decide
There are two ways a trial ends.
- Manual share. You can move the Reel to your profile at any point. Sharing it ends the trial, and the Reel becomes visible to your followers (Planoly).
- Auto-share. If you turn this on, Instagram looks at the first 72 hours and decides whether to share the Reel with followers. Instagram does not publish an exact threshold. One source says the decision compares the Reel with your recent regular Reels, which only works if you have enough history.
If you are unsure, share manually after you have seen the first day's numbers. Auto-share removes that choice, but you cannot see the rule it uses.
Eligibility: the sources conflict
This is the part to check first, because the reports do not match:
- A 2025 update, reported by The Keyword, said trial Reels were open to all public accounts with at least 1,000 followers, and that Instagram might expand to smaller accounts.
- A summary of Instagram's Help Center page on Trial Reels lists a lower threshold of 200 followers for professional accounts, and 1,000 for personal accounts. It also says that an account that loses recommendation eligibility loses trial access until it qualifies again.
We could not open the Help Center directly, so the second point comes from a summary of that page. The sources do not date the change, so the lower professional threshold may be the current rule. Check the Help Center page and your own account before you rely on either number.
If you do not see the option
A how-to guide from Planoly notes that the labels and placement of the trial option have changed across app versions. If you cannot find it, first update the app. Then check the eligibility rules above, since an account that does not qualify may not have access to the feature. Labels also differ between guides, so look for the wording in your own app rather than matching it to a screenshot from an article.
Scheduling
Scheduling tools say you can schedule a trial Reel. Planoly and Publer both publish guides. One vendor blog claims Instagram's official API supports scheduling trials in 2026, but that comes from a single source. We did not find an Instagram statement on it. Test a scheduled trial on your account before you depend on it.
Does it help growth?
We found no independent data comparing trial Reels with regular Reels. Most of the guides come from scheduling and analytics vendors, so their claims about results are anecdotes, not measurements.
How to test one on your account
- Pick one Reel with a hook you would be happy to share widely.
- Post it as a trial and write down the time.
- Check the insights around the 24-hour mark, then again after 72 hours.
- Share it with everyone if the numbers are strong. If not, leave it or archive it.
- Log each trial in a spreadsheet. Several Reels tested the same way tell you more than one.

Sources and limits: this post relies on search summaries of several pages, because our research environment could not open the Instagram Help Center, Social Media Today, The Keyword or Business Today directly. Check the linked pages for current details.
